The Netherlands is known for its flat geography, canals, windmills and tulip fields. Amsterdam, the capital, is famous for its museums, bike paths and nightlife. The country is also renowned for its strong tradition of tolerance and innovation in areas such as urban planning and transport.

The climate is temperate maritime, with cool summers and mild winters. Rain is frequent throughout the year.

Languages

The official language is Dutch. In the Friesland region, Frisian is also recognized as an official language. English is widely spoken throughout the country.

Driving

Drive on the right. Freeways do not have tolls for cars, except in some specific tunnels. The country has an excellent network of roads and cycle paths.

Camping

Wild camping is prohibited. There are numerous campsites and specific areas for motorhomes.

Biker Zones

The most popular motorcycle routes are along the North Sea coast, the dykes and dams, and in the Limburg region, which offers more winding roads than the rest of the country.

Special Zones

Large cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht have low-emission zones (milieuzones), with restrictions on older vehicles. Historic centers are often pedestrianized or with conditioned access.
