India is the seventh largest and most populous country in the world. It is famous for its cultural diversity, the Taj Mahal, spirituality, gastronomy and Bollywood.

Climate

Very diverse: tropical in the south, desert in Rajasthan, temperate in the north and alpine in the Himalayas. Monsoons from June to September.

Languages

Hindi is the most widely spoken, but there are dozens of regional languages (Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Punjabi). English is widely used.

Driving

Drive on the left. Many highways have tolls, paid at booths or electronically (FASTag).

In India, telecommunications regulations (under the Indian Telegraph Act) are extremely strict for reasons of national security. Devices that function as satellite transmitters/communicators independent of local mobile networks—capable of sending SOS messages or two-way coordinates (such as the Garmin inReach— are illegal without prior authorization from the Indian Department of Telecommunications.

Camping

Wild camping is not very common. It’s more common to find guesthouses and campsites in tourist and mountain areas.

Biker Zones

Famous routes include Leh-Ladakh in the Himalayas, Goa and Rajasthan, and the Manali to Leh Road.

Special Zones

Large cities like New Delhi and Mumbai have traffic-calmed zones and heavy pollution.
