Mauritania is a challenging and fascinating destination for motorcyclists, with roads that cut through the Sahara desert, endless dunes and a sense of isolation that defines true African adventure.

Mauritania is located in northwest Africa, and much of its territory is desert (Sahara). It is known for the historic cities of Chinguetti and Ouadane, the iron ore train from Zouérat to Nouadhibou and for its arid landscapes and imposing dunes.

Climate

Desert and very dry, with extremely high temperatures in summer. In winter, the nights can be cold.

Languages

Arabic is official. French is widely used in administration and education. National languages such as Pulaar, Soninké and Wolof are spoken in several regions.

Driving

Drive on the right. Main roads connect Nouakchott to Nouadhibou and Mali. Outside these, many roads are sandy. There are no tolls.

Camping

Wild camping is possible in remote areas, but local guides are recommended for safety reasons. There are some campsites in towns and near oases.

Biker Zones

The routes across the Sahara desert are challenging and popular with adventure motorcyclists, such as the famous Dakar Rally (an ancient route across the country).

Special Zones

Nouakchott and Nouadhibou have disorganized traffic, with poorly regulated parking. In border and military zones, access is restricted.
