Austria is an Alpine country in Central Europe, known for its mountainous landscapes, classical music and historic cities. Vienna, the capital, is famous for its imperial palaces, opera house and traditional cafés. The country is also a popular destination for winter sports, especially in the Tyrol region.
Climate
The climate is continental, with cold winters and hot summers. In the Alpine areas, winters are harsh, with abundant snowfalls, while in the east, near Vienna, summers can be quite hot.
Languages
The official language is German, although there are Austrian dialects that are quite different from standard German. There are also minorities who speak Hungarian, Slovenian and Croatian in specific regions.
Driving
In Austria, you drive on the right. To drive on highways and expressways, you must buy a vignette (stamp) that you stick on the windshield. The sticker can be bought at service stations, borders and online. There are also some Alpine roads with additional tolls.
Camping
Wild camping is generally prohibited, except in some specific mountainous areas. The country offers a vast network of organized campsites.
Biker Zones
Austria is a top destination for motorcyclists. Alpine roads such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the Tyrol passes are routes famous for their natural beauty and challenging curves.
Special Zones
In Vienna and other larger cities, there are restricted parking zones, which require a ticket (Kurzparkzone). Some central streets are pedestrianized and off-limits to cars.
