Benin is located in West Africa, between Togo and Nigeria, with a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea. It is known as the historical cradle of the former Kingdom of Dahomey, for its vibrant culture, colorful markets and voodoo temples. Cotonou is the most dynamic urban center and the main point of entry into the country.
Climate
Tropical, hot and humid. There are two dry seasons (December to April and July to September) and two rainy seasons (April to July and September to November).
Languages
French is official. Several local languages are also spoken, such as Fon, Yoruba, Bariba and Dendi.
Driving
Drive on the right. The main roads are reasonably well maintained, with few tolls. Traffic in Cotonou can be heavy and chaotic.
Camping
Wild camping is possible in rural areas, but should be done with caution. There are some campsites and tourist lodges near the coast and nature parks.
Biker Zones
Popular routes include the Cotonou-Ouidah-Grand-Popo coastal road and inland to Abomey and Natitingou.
Special Zones
Cotonou has heavy traffic areas and limited parking in the center. Some port and government areas have restricted access.
