The United States is a federation of 50 states and one federal district, and is one of the most influential countries in the world politically, economically, culturally and militarily. The territory is vast, ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, the deserts of the southwest, the forests of New England and the beaches of Florida and California.
Climate
Extremely varied due to the size of the country: continental inland, tropical in Florida and Hawaii, arid in the southwest, Mediterranean in California, polar in Alaska and temperate on the east coast.
Languages
English is predominant throughout the territory. Spanish is widely spoken, especially in the southwest and Florida. Other common languages include Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and French.
Driving
Drive on the right. Speed limits vary by state. Many highways are free, but there are toll roads and bridges. Payment can be made by cash, card or electronic systems such as E-ZPass.
Camping
Camping is very popular and regulated in national and state parks. Wild camping (“boondocking” or “dispersed camping”) is allowed in many public areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Biker Zones
The USA offers iconic motorcycle routes such as Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway (California), the scenic roads of the Rocky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Special Zones
Many large cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco) have restricted traffic zones, expensive parking and heavy traffic. Some metropolises require urban tolls (congestion charges under study in New York).
