Malaysia is divided into the peninsula (with Kuala Lumpur and Penang) and the island of Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak). It is known for its beaches, tropical jungles, cultural diversity and skyscrapers such as the Petronas Towers.
Climate
Equatorial: hot and humid all year round, with seasonal monsoons (November to March on the east coast).
Languages
Malay is official. English is widely spoken, as is Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese) and Tamil.
Driving
Drive on the left. Many highways are gated, with manual or electronic payment (Touch ‘n Go).
Camping
Wild camping is not common, but it is allowed in some natural areas. There are regulated campsites in reserves and near beaches.
Biker Zones
Popular routes include the road through the Cameron Highlands, the east coast and the wildly scenic island of Borneo.
Special Zones
Kuala Lumpur has heavy traffic areas, pedestrian roads and paid parking.
