Morocco is a country located in northern Africa, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and separated from Europe by the Strait of Gibraltar. Known for its vibrant culture, bustling markets (souks) and stunning landscapes, Morocco offers a unique blend of mountains, desert and coastline. The country is divided into several regions: in the north, you’ll find modern Tangier and historic Fez; in the center, the Atlas Mountains separate the Sahara desert from major cities like Marrakesh and Casablanca. To the south, the desert dominates with its dunes and oases, making it a popular area for adventure.
Climate
Morocco has a varied climate, with a Mediterranean climate along the coast and a desert climate inland and to the south. In the Atlas Mountains, winters can be cold, with snow in the higher elevations, while summers are hot and dry throughout most of the country. Spring (from March to May) and fall (from September to November) are the best times to travel by motorcycle, when temperatures are milder.
Languages
Arabic and Amazigh (Berber) are the official languages of Morocco, with French widely spoken in business, government and education, especially in the big cities. Spanish is also spoken in the northern regions, such as Tangier and Tetouan, due to their proximity to Spain and their colonial past.
Driving
Driving in Morocco is done on the right-hand side of the road, and the highways are in good condition, connecting the main cities. Secondary roads, especially in rural or mountainous areas, can be more challenging. On highways, tolls are paid at manual stations, usually in dirhams or by bank card. Extra attention is needed on desert and mountain roads, where the terrain can be unpredictable.
Camping
Wild camping is tolerated in some areas of Morocco, especially in the desert, but it must be done with caution and respect for local and environmental regulations. There are also several organized campsites, especially in tourist areas and near natural attractions, offering security and basic services.
Biker Zones
Morocco is a fantastic destination for bikers, offering a wide variety of landscapes and terrains. The Atlas Mountains Route is especially popular, offering incredible views and riding challenges. The Tizi n’Tichka road, between Marrakesh and Ouarzazate, crosses the high peaks of the Atlas and is one of the most spectacular in the country. Another option is to explore the Sahara Desert, with several routes leading to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga.
Special Zones
In major Moroccan cities such as Marrakesh, Casablanca and Rabat, the historic centers (medinas) have very restricted access for vehicles, with narrow streets and areas reserved for pedestrians and mopeds only. In these areas, it is recommended to park outside and explore on foot, so check where you are staying in the big cities.
In addition, in the mountains and remote areas, some roads may be closed due to adverse weather conditions, especially in winter.
