Suriname is the smallest independent country in South America, located on the northern coast. It is known for its unspoiled Amazon rainforest, cultural diversity (African, Indian, indigenous, Javanese and Dutch influences) and the historic center of Paramaribo, a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Climate
Equatorial, hot and humid, with two rainy seasons (April to August and November to February) and two dry seasons.
Languages
Dutch is official. Sranan Tongo (Creole) is widely spoken, as are indigenous languages, Hindi and Javanese. English is understood in urban areas.
Driving
You drive on the left (British colonial heritage). The main roads are asphalted, but inland dirt roads predominate. Tolls are not common.
Camping
Wild camping is possible in natural areas, but is usually done with guides. There are eco-lodges and basic camping areas.
Biker Zones
Routes through the Amazon rainforest and roads to Brokopondo or Albina are popular adventures for adventure motorcyclists.
Special Zones
Paramaribo has pedestrian zones and central areas with limited parking.
