The feeling of freedom on a motorcycle trip is priceless, but safety is the top priority. The experienced motorcyclist knows that preparation is not limited to the route and luggage, it begins and ends with protecting your life, your bike and your financial well-being.
We’ve left the security pillars that we think are essential.
The Financial Shield: Essential Insurance
Insurance isn’t a luxury, it’s your safety net. When traveling, it’s essential to have the right cover.
Motorcycle insurance
- Civil Liability: This is the mandatory minimum in Europe and many other countries. It proves that you are covered for damage you may cause to third parties (people or property). Don’t travel without an insurance certificate!
- Motorcycle Assistance: Make sure your insurance includes towing your motorcycle in the event of a breakdown or accident. This is vital in remote areas or countries with little infrastructure. Check that your travel assistance covers the shipment of the motorcycle for repair or to your country of origin (in cases of more serious damage).
- Own Damage (Optional): If your bike is stolen or damaged through no fault of your own, you need to have this cover. It’s an extra cost, but on long journeys and with a loaded bike, it gives you immense peace of mind.
Travel Insurance (The Most Important)
- Medical expenses and repatriation: Medical costs abroad can be astronomical. Your insurance should cover all medical costs and, crucially, your return home (repatriation) in the event of a serious accident or illness.
While motorcycle insurance covers damage to the vehicles involved in the accident, this insurance covers damage to the driver and passenger. We recommend that you check the insurance limit considering the countries you will be traveling to, as access to hospitals and treatments is much more expensive in some countries than in others.
We suggest IATI Travel Insurance as it guarantees coverage for damages in motor vehicle accidents. You can compare the coverage of various insurance policies before traveling and choose the one that best suits you. IATI offers 24-hour telephone assistance.

The Personal Shield: You Can Never Have Too Much Equipment
Active safety starts with the helmet and doesn’t end with the tires. Your gear is your armor.
- Helmet: It must be certified and in good condition. Check the condition of the visor. A scratched or dirty visor is a danger at night.
- Technical Clothing: Jacket, pants, and gloves with certified protective gear. The material must be abrasion-resistant. Even in summer, avoid wearing a T-shirt; your skin is not protected.
- Boots: High-top boots that protect the ankle and shin. A sprain can ruin a trip.
Motorcycle Safety: Stopping and Parking Without Stress
After a long day, the last thing you want to do is worry about your motorcycle.
- Parking: Always opt for enclosed parking lots, those with CCTV surveillance, or hotel garages. Ask at the hotel reception about the safest place.
- Chains and Locks: Don’t rely solely on the ignition lock. Use a good disc lock with an alarm (it’s lightweight and makes noise) and a tempered steel chain to secure the motorcycle to a fixed object (post, fence, etc.), if possible.
- Valuables: Always remove your GPS, storage bag, and intercom when parking. Opportunity is what makes the thief.
Driving Safety: The Human Factor
The biggest risk factor is you. Your mind and body have to be as prepared as the motorcycle.
- Rest and Hydration: Fatigue and dehydration drastically reduce your reaction time. Take short breaks every 1 hour and 30 minutes and drink water regularly.
- Route Knowledge: Don’t rely 100% on the GPS. Study the route before takeoff. Knowing what’s coming next (tight turns, descents, gravel) gives you the necessary anticipation to react.
- Local Rules: Laws change at each border. Check speed limits, radar regulations, and mandatory equipment for your destination country.
A motorcycle trip is meant to be a memorable experience. Don’t let a lack of preparation ruin everything. Be prepared, be safe, and enjoy the road.
Happy riding!
